After dropping two close matches to Connecticut in 2012, Courtney Draper and the USF volleyball team got their turn Sunday.
The Bulls (8-9 overall, 2-1 The American) exacted revenge on UConn, using a career-best 20 digs from freshman Dakota Hampton to sweep past the Huskies, 25-17, 25-20, 27-25 to improve to 2-0 at home vs. American Conference opponents.
USF's scrappy defense out-dug Connecticut 76-56, using extended rallies to hold a .217-.085 advantage in hitting percentage over the Huskies Sunday afternoon. Four Bulls reached double-digit digs as USF cruised to the 3-0 win.
After a slow first set, Bulls' outside hitter Erin Fairs turned it on, connecting on 11 of her team-high 15 kills over the next two sets. Fairs hit .526 over the final two sets, committing just one hitting error. Fairs got help from a balanced offensive attack, as six Bulls recorded at least three kills, and four contributed at least six kills.
Senior middle blocker Andrea Rodriguez Gomez continued to impress at the net, leading USF with six blocks, including three solo blocks. Rodriguez Gomez also notched three service aces and six kills.
Defensively, Fairs collected 17 digs to pick up her 12th double-double of the year, and setter Natalia Soares locked down her fifth double-double, tallying 12 digs and 23 assists.
USF returns to the road next week in search of two more wins, as the Bulls face Louisville Friday and Cincinnati Sunday.
