Nine team blocks and a career-high 27 digs from Erin Fairs weren't enough Friday night, as the USF volleyball team's win-streak came to a halt in The Corral.
The Bulls (13-11 overall, 7-3 The American) fell 23-25, 19-25,23-25 to UCF, losing the hitting battle .162-.101 and getting out-blocked 14-9 to end a five-match winning streak, the longest of USF's season so far.
Every front row player for the Bulls contributed at least one block assist and each person seeing time in the back row registered at least four digs, but USF's offense stalled at the hands of a stingy Knights' defense, as only one Bull registered double-digit kills.
USF came out on the wrong end of a defensive struggle in the first set, leading through the first 17 points despite registering just 10 kills. The Knights used four kills from middle blocker DeLaina Sarden to take a late lead at 18-17, and finished off a set which saw neither team hit over .060. The Bulls registered four blocks in the set as Andrea Rodriguez Gomez and Kayla Bivins teamed up to stuff the UCF attack three times, but couldn't regain the lead in a 25-23 setback.
Riding the first-set win, the Knights jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the second set, picking up steam offensively. UCF outhit the Bulls .324-.093 in the second set, despite 17 USF digs and three blocks, using the early lead to roll to a 2-0 match advantage at the intermission.
The Bulls swung the momentum back in their favor in the third, using six kills and 12 digs from Fairs to lead through the 17th point, and tie things up again at 21. USF's offense fell just short in the final set however as the Bulls lost four of the final six points, snapping a five-match winning streak.
Rodriguez Gomez hit a team-best .385 in the match, adding four blocks and an ace to her totals, while Fairs posted 10 kills, two service aces and 27 digs. Bivins tied a career-high with five block assists in the loss.
USF will try to keep its three-match road winning streak alive next weekend, as it travels to UConn Friday, and faces Rutgers Sunday.
