TAMPA - The USF softball team dropped their second game of the day
after losing to N.C. State in front of a crowd of 1,073 at the USF softball
stadium Saturday night.
The Bulls (5-3) could not overcome three errors and nine
runners left on base, falling by a score of 2-1.
N.C. State struck first when Kirsty Grant scored on an RBI
double by Hanna Sommer to right center. Grant scored all the way from first
after being hit by a pitch.
After starting the game, freshman pitcher Erica Nunn was
replaced by senior Lindsey Richardson in the second inning. Richardson promptly
struck out the first two batters she faced and finished with four strikeouts for the game.
D'Anna Devine led off the third inning with a double to
right center field, but the Bulls we're unable to take advantage as Devine was
stranded at third after a sacrifice bunt and two ground outs.
After the Wolfpack tacked on another run in the fifth to
make it 2-0 due to back-to-back errors by the Bulls, junior Sara Nevins came on
to pitch replacing Richardson.
Nevins got a big strikeout to end the inning with
the bases loaded to keep the deficit at two.
USF had the bases loaded in the fifth after Courtney Goff
reached on an error, D'Anna Devine singled and Stephanie Medina walked. However,
the Bulls were unable to take advantage as Lee Ann Spivey hit a hard ground
ball to pitcher Emily Weiman to end the threat.
Nevins worked out of another bases loaded jam in the sixth
when she got Leah Jones to ground out to third base.
The Bulls would use that momentum as Courtney Goff recorded
her first RBI of the season on a ground out that scored Kenshyra Jackson after
she singled to start the inning. That cut the Wolfpack lead to one heading into
the seventh.
Unfortunately USF was unable to get a runner on base in the
seventh after Weiman recorded two of her nine strikeouts to ice the game.
USF will face Coastal Carolina at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow to
finish out the USF Tournament.
