Bulls Can't Get it Going Against Valpo

TAMPA –USF (6-8) fell to Valparaiso, 5-2, on Saturday night before a crowd of 1,080 at USF baseball stadium.

“I'm disappointed in the overall performance of the team,” said head coach Lelo Prado.

James Ramsay got things going with a two-out single in the third inning.  Jimmy Falla doubled to center field to score Ramsay and give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders got one back on a RBI-single by Andrew Bain to tie the game at 1.

Valparaiso first basemen John Loeffler gave the Crusaders the lead in the sixth on a RBI-single that plated Tanner Vavra.  The Crusaders tacked on three more runs in the seventh on a two-out double by Karch Kowalczyk with the bases loaded to take a 5-1 lead.

USF was able to get one back on a defensive error that allowed Alex Mendez to score and cut the lead to 5-2 in the eighth.

Starting pitcher Nick Gonzalez gave up two runs on five hits in six innings of work.  The left-hander struck out four batters.

Seven pitchers saw action against Valparaiso giving up three runs in three inning.  Designated hitter Alex Mendez got in on the action and nabbed his first strikeout of the season to get out of the inning.

“We didn't play really good defense tonight and we have to hit the ball better tomorrow,” said Prado.

The Bulls will face Valparaiso in the final game of the series 1 p.m. Sunday at USF baseball stadium.
