No. 25 USF Bounces Back With Walk-Off Win

TAMPA – USF (27-15, 11-2) won in walk-off fashion on Friday night.

Nik Alfonso walked-off on a RBI fielder's choice to lift the Bulls over St. Johns, 4-3, before a crowd of 1,375 at USF Baseball Stadium.

“We hit the ball great and we hung in there,” said Prado.

Right-hander Jimmy Herget allowed three runs on seven hits and five strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Left-hander Lawrence Pardo came in to relieve Herget.  Pardo (5-1)  pitched three innings allowing no runs, no walks and just three hits.

“Pardo did an outstanding job in relief and Herget got it done,” said Prado.  “He (Herget) gave us seven strong innings.”

The Red Storm jumped out to an early 3-0 lead scoring two runs on a two-out two-RBI single in the second inning and they added another run in the fourth on an RBI-single by Jimmy Brennan.

USF got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Buddy Putnam hit a two-out RBI-single to right-field to bring home Jimmy Falla.  Kyle Copack followed with a two-run bomb over the right-field wall to tie the game at 3.

Copack went 2-for-3 with one run, two RBI's, two walks and he snagged his second homer of the season.

“I felt good about Copack coming to the ballpark today and Putnam,” Prado said. “Both of them had huge RBI's and produced for us.”

The Bulls will host St. John's in the second game of the weekend series 6 p.m. Saturday at USF Baseball Stadium.
