TAMPA – The University of South Florida has added Elliott Charles as Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Doug Woolard announced on Friday. A 2005 graduate of USF, Charles brings over six years of experience in athletics compliance and academic services to the department.
“It's a true honor and a blessing to have the opportunity to serve my alma mater,” Charles said. “My family and I are excited to be back home. I look forward to contributing towards the continued success and growth of USF Athletics.”
Charles joins USF after spending one year with the Mid-American Conference as the Assistant Commissioner for Compliance. While with the MAC, he served as the conference's primary compliance contact and was responsible for rules education, interpretations and was the liaison to the NCAA for member institutions.
"We are very fortunate to have Elliott join our USF compliance staff,” said Associate A.D. for Compliance Craig Angelos. “He has tremendous knowledge of how to combine compliance with technology that will help us create a state-of-the-art, completely paperless compliance program. He will be a key contributor towards having the best compliance systems and procedures in the country."
Prior to his time with the MAC, Charles spent one season as Assistant Director of Athletic Compliance at the University of Alabama. He supervised the monitoring of recruiting, eligibility and financial aid, and implemented compliance policies and procedures. Charles also was the primary technology contact for the athletic compliance office and managed all issues dealing with the ACS system, which is also used at USF. He managed technology projects in conjunction with the IT staff, UA's MIS and all components of ACS, which improved interpretation response time and overall operations of the athletic compliance office.
Charles also worked at Northern Illinois University for two seasons as Compliance Coordinator from Oct. 2009 to Sept. 2011. In DeKalb, Ill., Charles monitored recruitment, determined eligibility of current and prospective student-athletes, managed NCAA procedures, rules and education and developed student-service life-skills programs and initiatives.
From Sept. 2008 to Jan. 2010, Charles worked as Director of Marketing for DR&M Builders, Inc., where he created marketing and sales plans and managed all interactive and creative web/media production. He also worked with the Chicago Cubs on Special Projects from March 2008 to November 2008s, coordinating a number of Wrigley Field community relations projects.
Charles received his bachelor of science in management from USF in 2005. He also earned a master's degree in sport management from Illinois State University in 2007 and his master's in business administration from Northern Illinois University in 2012.
While working on his master's degree at Illinois State, Charles served as a graduate assistant in the academic services department, counseling student-athletes in academic and professional development. He was also instrumental in monitoring student-athlete eligibility.
