TAMPA, OCT. 14, 2014 – Former USF sharpshooter Inga Orekhova is excited to be continuing her professional career overseas.
The Bulls' 20th 1,000-point scorer is currently playing for BC Belfius Namur Capitale in Belgium. Orekhova has averaged 15.5 points and has gone 8-for-13 from 3-point range in two games with her new squad.
Orekhova was originally selected in the second round of the WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream and she's happy o continue playing basketball as a professional less than 2,000 miles away from her hometown of Sevastopol, Ukraine.
“I get to do what I love since I basically starting walking, plus I get paid doing what I love. Not many people can say that,” Orekhova said.
Orekhova played for the Bulls from 20011-14 and her career included a trip to the NCAA tournament and the WNIT Final Four. The 6-foot-2 standout scored 1,072 points and made 218 3-pointers during her time in Green and Gold.
Orekhova said aside from competing in the Belgian League, she'll also get to take part in the Euro Cup that begins in November. Belfius Namur's bracket includes two Hungarian teams that include former Notre Dame guard Kayla McBride and former Southern Miss guard Jamierra Faulkner.
“That's pretty exciting,” Orekhova said. “We will play in the Belgian League on the weekends and the Euro Cup during the week.”
Orekhova said she misses seeing USF fans in the stands but she's enjoying her time in Belgium on and off the court.
“I get to meet new people. They speak French here, so I understand them, and I also like the food here. Their waffles are on point,” she said. “I also like that Paris is only like 3 hours away. It's pretty nice here.”
