Bulls get Past Blazers 73-71 in Overtime

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., NOV. 20, 2014 – Anthony Collins scored eight of USF's 12 points in overtime to lead the Bulls to a 73-71 win at UAB on Thursday at Bartow Arena.

Collins, who was scoreless at halftime, finished with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and had a team-high five assists. The Bulls improved to 3-0 on the season as head coach Orlando Antigua ended up on the winning end of his first career road game.

"I am extremely happy with our resilience and how we continue to weather storms with the ups and downs of the game," said Antigua. "Our leadership stepped up tonight and we continue to grow each game."

There were many ups and downs in the game with 14 ties and 16 lead changes throughout. Still, there were numerous instances where the young Bulls stepped up. Leading 59-58 with 1:19 remaining in regulation, sophomore forward Chris Perry (Bartow, Fla.) had a left-handed jumper that was off target, but there to rebound was redshirt freshman Bo Zeigler (Detroit) who used his length to tip the ball in. The Bulls led 61-58 with 54 seconds remaining.

"That's what we need from Bo," Antigua said. "We need his hustle points, his energy and his commitment to defense."

After three made free throws by the Blazers, who went to the line 47 times, the most by a USF opponent since prior to 2002, it was USF's ball with the game tied and 7.1 seconds remaining. Collins took an open layup in the lane that rimmed out to send the game to overtime tied 61-61.

"We wanted to try to keep the ball in AC's hands," said Antigua. "He got a nice look at the rim with a shot that he makes 80 percent of the time."

Collins shined in overtime, but senior guard Corey Allen Jr. (St. Louis) scored the final three points in overtime including a layup with 25 seconds remaining to break a 70-70 tie. After UAB's Chris Cokley made one-of-two free throw attempts, Allen Jr. was fouled and made one free throw. UAB failed to get a shot off with seven seconds to play.

"Anytime you can win on the road, it's big," Antigua said. "Especially when we have all of these new pieces and not knowing how they will respond to a road environment. We are really happy to come out with the win."

USF shot 53.6 percent from the field while UAB shot 35.8 percent. The Bulls were forced into 24 turnovers with the Blazers committing 16. Perhaps the biggest discrepancy came at the free throw line where the Bulls were 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) and the Blazers were 28-of-47 (59.6 percent).

"We have to do a much better job in our decision making. You can't give any team that many opportunities and expect to get win."

Perry led the Bulls with 18 points and eight rebounds. The Blazers were led by C.J. Washington who had 17 points and seven rebounds.

USF will next play at NC State on Sunday at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.
