NEW ORLEANS, NOV. 23, 2014 – Erin Fairs' eighth 20-kill performance of the season and 21st double-double helped end USF's final road game in style Sunday, sending the Bulls to a five set win over Tulane in New Orleans.
USF (13-17 overall, 7-11 The American) used nine service aces and strong offensive streaks in a comeback win over the Green Wave, rallying from a 2-1 deficit despite trailing in most statistical categories. The Bulls bunched eight of their nine aces into the three sets won, topping Tulane for the second time this season.
Down a set and trailing 8-0 in the second set, USF used six kills from Fairs and four team service aces – two each from Amy Van Sant and Dakota Hampton – to tie the set at 13, and edge the Green Wave 25-22 to tie the match at one set each heading into intermission.
After a third-set win by Tulane, senior middle blocker Jennica Mullins led the Bulls through the fourth set. Mullins posted three of her five blocks in the set, adding a pair of kills, including the set-winner to force a fifth set for the seventh time this season.
With USF 3-3 in five-set matches this year, Fairs helped push the Bulls above .500. The junior contributed four kills and a pair of aces in the set, helping USF to a 14-12 lead, looking for match point.
USF would seal the win with defense, as Joli Holland teamed with Hampton for Holland's second block of the set, handing USF the 15-12 five-set win to end the Bulls' road season.
Fairs ended the match with 20 kills and 15 digs, with Hampton adding nine kills and 13 digs at the other outside hitter position. Middle blockers Mullins and Holland recorded eight and six kills, respectively, with freshman setter Alex Mendoza recording a career-high 49 assists with nine digs, narrowly missing the double-double.
Junior libero Wylie Devlin led all USF defensive players with 16 digs in the win. USF finishes the season at home, hosting Memphis in the USF Corral Wednesday at 7 p.m., and facing Cincinnati Friday at 2 p.m.
