TAMPA, DEC. 18, 2014 - The Bulls got the production they've been looking for from their bigs in an 89-69 loss to Seton Hall before a crowd of 3,330 at the Sun Dome on Thursday night.
Sophomore forward Chris Perry (Bartow, Fla.) posted his seventh game of the season in double figures with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Freshman center Ruben Guerrero (Spain) put together his best game as a Bull with a career-high 13 points, while redshirt freshman forward Bo Zeigler (Detroit) added 11 points.
"Our bigs, we talked about the past few days and the past week about trying to get them going," head coach Orlando Antigua said. "They got going, so now we need to get our guards back, so that we can see if we can put together a full game with our guards playing well and our bigs playing well."
Seton Hall (9-1), which received 14 points in this week's AP Top 25 Poll, made 11 3-pointers and had five players finish in double figures led by Angel Delgado's 16 points. The Pirates shot 53 percent from the field (28-for-52) and never trailed in the battle of former Big East foes.
"I think they could have dropkicked the ball into the basket from anywhere on the court right now the way they shot the ball. You have to give them a lot of credit," Antigua said.
USF (5-5) went 0-for-9 from long range after heading into halftime down, 45-33, despite a big first half from Guerrero, who was up to 13 points. Playing in his sixth game as a Bull, Guerrero finished in double figures for the first time and added four rebounds, a block and an assist.
"Coach had been telling me this past week to play angry, so that's what I did," Guerrero said. "We played a good team and I just tried my best."
Another productive Bull was junior point guard Anthony Collins (Houston), who finished with 10 assists to go along with seven points and four rebounds.
USF (5-5) finishes up the week with a road test at the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise, Fla., where the Bulls will face FSU 2 p.m. Saturday.
"It will be a good challenge for us mentally to see how quickly we can turn around and prepare for that kind of a game," Antigua said.
The Bulls return to the Sun Dome to host Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 1 p.m. and Bowling Green on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. Purchase tickets HERE.
