AMBLER, PA., MAY 3, 2014 – USF ace Sara Nevins continued her dominance this season, throwing her second career perfect game in the Bulls' 8-0 victory over Temple in game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader in Philadelphia.
Nevins (Pinellas Park, Fla.) faced only 15 batters as the run-rule was put into effect after the Bulls led by eight runs after the fifth inning. It was the first perfect game and fourth no-hitter for Nevins this season. Her only other perfect game came back on March 11, 2012 in a 2-0 win over Toledo.
USF jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning. Ashli Goff (Tampa) got things started with a single through the right side and the Bulls loaded the bases after back-to-back walks for Stephanie Medina (Tampa) and Lee Ann Spivey (Palm Coast, Fla.). With two outs, Karla Claudio (Puerto Rico) drew a walk to allow Goff to score the game's first run and Veronica Gajownik followed that with a two-run single to right field to make it 3-0.
A pair of home runs guided the Bulls to another three-run inning in the third. Kourtney Salvarola led off the frame with her career-best 14th home run of the season to make it 4-0.
After a double to left center by Medina, the Bulls added to their lead with another long ball, this time a two-run bomb by Claudio. It was her second home run of the season and helped her set a new career-high with three RBI.
The Bulls tacked on another run in the fourth thanks to an RBI bloop single by Salvarola to score Juli Weber (Hegins, Pa.) from third and make it 7-0. Salvarola (Arnold, Md.) went 2-for-3 on the day with a run and two RBI to go along with her conference-leading 14th homer.
A sacrifice fly by Weber in the top of the fifth made it 8-0 and Nevins cruised through the bottom half of the inning to end the game and secure the perfect game.
With the win, USF improved to 37-14 overall and 11-5 in American Athletic Conference play.
