TAMPA, AUG. 29, 2014 – Orlando Antigua will take his Dominican Republic men's national team to Bilbao, Spain on Aug. 30 to play in the FIBA World Cup.
The Dominican Republic will play at 6:30 a.m. against Ukraine, its first of five games in group play. Its remaining games in Group C are against New Zealand (Aug. 31, 6:30 a.m. ET.), Finland (Sept. 2, 3:30 p.m. ET.), USA (Sept. 3, 3:30 p.m. ET.) and Turkey (Sept. 4, 3:30 p.m. ET). All of the games will be shown on live on ESPN3.com with the exception of the game with USA, which will be aired on ESPN2. The top four teams from each of the four pools advance to bracket play which begins on Sept. 6.
Antigua's squad finished its exhibition schedule with a record of 4-3 and won its last two games against Senegal (83-47) and Philippines (86-79) in Madrid, Spain. On Wednesday, he trimmed the roster to 12 players, the required number to compete in FIBA games.
It is Antigua's fourth season as a member of the coaching staff of the Dominican Republic, the country he was born in. He was an assistant coach with the team before taking over head coaching duties last season. The Dominican Republic is competing in the FIBA World Cup for the first time since 1978.
