TAMPA (Sept. 14, 2014)— The USF women's soccer team posted its fourth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over the Texas Longhorns, Sunday afternoon at Corbett Stadium. It was a special day for the Bulls as members of the Special Olympics were in attendance. Before the game, the Olympians escorted the team on to the field during the introductions. “I always think it's really cool when we can love on the Special Olympians,” head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. “I think the Olympians and their parents are just awesome.” Olivia Chance recorded the first goal of the day at the 31-minute mark. Sienna Brooks attempted a shot first, but Texas goalkeeper Abby Smith was there for the deflection. Amidst the Texas defenders attempting to send the ball out, Chance gained control and pounded the ball into the right side of the net to give USF the 1-0 lead. The Bulls struck once again on a penalty kick taken by senior Demi Stokes. Freshman Marissa Milazzo was making a run for the goal before being dragged down by a Texas defender. Stokes took her second penalty kick of the season and blazed it past Smith for the 2-0 lead. “In the last game, the girls felt like they really worked hard but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net,” Schilte-Brown said. “They had a lot of reason to be motivated. We love playing at home and think our fans are exceptional.” Senior Daniela Andrade recorded the first shot of the morning for the Bulls on a pass from Chance. Andrade couldn't get the shot past Smith, keeping the game scoreless. Jordyn Listro had a chance to give the Bulls the lead with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. Stokes sent a corner kick to the opposite side where Listro found the ball and pounded it toward the net. Her attempt fell short as the ball hit the side of the net, denying Listro of her first goal of the season. Senior Lauriell Young and junior Jessica Clark both had opportunities to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead but sent both shots straight into the hands of Smith as the first half came to a close. The best chance for the Bulls to score in the second half came after a corner kick with 25 minutes remaining in the game. Stokes fired from the right side of the field and found Young on the far side of the net. Young headed the ball towards freshman Ocean Parr who had too much power behind her foot, sending the ball high. Stokes and Chance both created opportunities to open up the USF lead early on in the latter half of the game. Chance fired a shot just five minutes in to the second half but the Texas defense was there for the block. Stokes gained control of the ball after the deflection but couldn't get past the Longhorns goalkeeper. The Bulls outshot the Longhorns 21-14 with seven shots-on-goal and freshman goalkeeper Kat Elliott made four saves, while recording her first win and first shutout. The Bulls are back in action on Thursday as they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face Boston College in the last non-conference game of the season. The USF women's soccer team has posted two consecutive 10-plus win seasons and three in the last four years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance and recorded their first tournament victory in 2010. USF returns 23 players from last year's roster including All-American Athletic Conference second team forward Demi Stokes and All-Rookie Team defender Leticia Skeete. They also bring back 11 players that appeared in 15 or more games last season.
