Goodnight's First Start Successful in Bulls' Win

PITTSBURGH, SEPT. 20 - The University of South Florida volleyball team is developing an affinity for the five-set match. The Bulls improved to 3-1 this season in five-set matches, using a 21-kill, 15-dig effort from junior outside hitter Erin Fairs to edge Delaware Saturday in the Pitt Panther Invitational, 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 19-25, 15-10. Freshman Adyson Goodnight made a splash in her first career start, pounding out 13 kills and hitting .321 to help USF (5-6 overall) out-hit Delaware .253-.193. After winning the opening set for the second time this tournament, the Bulls turned to Goodnight, who turned it on in the second. The freshman racked up a set-high four kills, hitting .600 with a block to help USF to a 71 percent side-out rate, holding Delaware to just seven kills in a 25-20 win. The Blue Hens pushed back in the next two sets, fighting off losses in the third and fourth sets to force the Bulls into their fourth 5-set match of the season. USF responded in kind, hitting .389 as a team and getting three kills from Goodnight to put away Delaware, 15-10. Fairs led the Bulls offense, collecting her fifth 20-kill match and seventh double-double of the season. Fairs had five 20-kill matches over 32 contests in 2013, matching that total after just 11 outings this season. Fairs also inched closer to a pair of exclusive clubs, surpassing 900 career kills and 950 career digs. Senior Bree Scarbrough posted double-digit kills for the first time in her USF career, hitting .286 with 10 kills and five blocks in the win. Sophomore Dakota Hampton was the fourth Bull with double-digit kills, knocking down 11 kills to go with 17 digs in the match. Defensively, only Amy Van Sant topped Hampton's dig total. USF's sophomore libero set a new career-best, picking up 25 digs to help lead the Bulls past the Blue Hens. USF plays again today, finishing the tournament at 4:30 p.m. against Sacred Heart.
