TAMPA, NOV. 9, 2015 – Claudio Correa and Rigel Fernandes represented USF well at the 41st edition of the Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic over the weekend in Texas.
Correa made a solid title run before tying for second place at 4-under and Fernandes tied for 20th at El Paso Country Club (par-71, 6,889 yards). Correa, Fernandes and senior Chase Koepka qualified for the prestigious event by earning All-America honorable mention status last spring. The trio helped the Bulls advance to the NCAA Championship match play quarterfinals for the first time in program history.
“To have three guys qualify for the event is certainly a nice endorsement of where this program is going,” head coach Steve Bradley said.
Correa, a sophomore from Chile, opened the event with consecutive 3-under 68 rounds before finishing with a 73. At 4-under, Correa finished two shots behind event winner Zack Jaworski of Vanderbilt. Fernandes, a junior from Bradenton, opened with a 74 and closed with a 74.
“It was certainly an honor for Claudio and Rigel to play in the event,” Bradley said. “There were only 22 kids invited, and Claudio and Rigel said it was one of the best events they've ever played in. It was competitive and serious, but they also had a good time.”
Correa, Fernandes and the Bulls begin their spring season Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville. USF placed in the top five in two out of four fall events and won The Jackrabbit by 19 shots on Sept. 28 in Nebraska. Check out the Bulls' season schedule HERE.
