Troy Holston Jr. put together his best performance as a Bull in a 72-55 loss to Houston on Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Holston Jr., a freshman guard, set career highs with 22 points, five 3-pointers and seven rebounds while playing all 40 minutes in USF's final road game of the regular season.
"We needed that kind of effort from him," head coach Orlando Antigua said.
Junior Nehemias Morillo posted his 14th double-digit scoring game of the season with 12 points. Freshman Ruben Guerrero added nine points and six rebounds. Houston native Anthony Collins posted four points and a team-high five assists.
USF (8-21, 2-14) shot 44 percent from the field, 4 percent better than Houston, and went 6-for-13 (46 percent) from long range. Houston (10-18, 2-14) scored 22 points off 17 USF turnovers and finished with a 37-25 advantage on the boards.
Devonta Pollard led four Cougars in double figures with 18 points and grabbed five of Houston's 17 offensive rebounds.
Holston Jr. (Queens, N.Y.) started his big game with 11 points and five rebounds as USF headed into the break down, 33-29. Houston started the second half on a 15-2 run and capitalized on 11 USF turnovers after the break.
USF looks to regroup at home 7 p.m. Wednesday against rival UCF before finishing up the regular season Saturday, March 7 against Tulane at the Sun Dome. Purchase tickets HERE.
"We have to get back home tonight, practice tomorrow and get ready for a game that's going to be very difficult at home," Antigua said.
