DELAND, Fla. (March 31, 2015)— The USF baseball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end in a narrow 6-3 loss to the Stetson Hatters Tuesday night at Melching Field in DeLand Fa.
The Bulls (20-9-1) took an early lead thanks to a one-out double by Andres Leal in the top of the second. Senior first basemen Buddy Putnam and right fielder Luke Maglich led off the inning with back-to-back singles before coming home on Leal's two RBI double.
Maglich increased the Bulls lead in the fourth on a leadoff solo blast to right field. It was the third home run of the season for the junior and the 19th of the year for USF.
Stetson cut into the USF lead in the bottom of the fourth, responding with a two-run home run off the bat of John Fussell. The Hatters then took a lead, plating three more runs. Back-to-back walks placed two on before Tyler Bocock doubled to bring in two runs. Another double scored Bocock before Tommy Eveld came in to get the final out of the inning and end the scoring.
A sacrifice fly in the sixth by Bocock scored another Hatter baserunner to push the lead to 6-3.
The Bulls came up just shy of making a comeback in the ninth inning after Kevin Merrell and Levi Borders reached on back-to-back singles to put two on with just one out. However, fly outs from Luke Borders and Putnam ended the inning and the Bulls comeback attempt.
Leal was 2-for-3 on the night with two RBI and Maglich went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore RHP Brandon Lawson took the loss, striking out five and giving up five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. Tommy Eveld threw 3.1 innings of relief, giving up just one run on one hit while striking out three.
The Bulls return to conference action as they head to UConn for a three game series beginning Thursday, April 2.
