TAMPA (April 12, 2015)— The USF baseball team clinched their third straight conference series despite dropping the final game with ECU, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at the USF Baseball Stadium.
The Bulls (24-12-1, 7-2 American) still stand atop the conference leaderboard with just two losses in conference play. USF has a two-game advantage on the rest of the field and all other teams have at least three losses.
ECU (21-15, 4-5 American) scored three runs in the fifth and that was all they would need to secure the win. After two quick outs, center fielder Garrett Brooks singled and Jackson Mims followed with a walk to put two on. Shortstop Hunter Allen doubled to score Brooks before second basemen Charlie Yorgen walked to load the bases. Right fielder Reid Love doubled to plate Allen and Mims.
The Pirates scored two runs against right-handed relievers Michael Farley and Ryan Valdes in the eighth. A bases-loaded single by designated hitter Luke Lowery scored one before a sacrifice fly by Brooks plated another. ECU would tack on its final run in the ninth on another sacrifice fly by Travis Watkins.
Senior shortstop Kyle Teaf collected three of the Bulls' five hits in his second multi-hit game of the week. Senior first baseman Buddy Putnam and designated hitter Luke Borders also collected a hit each. Junior right fielder Luke Maglich extended his on-base streak to a team leading eight games with a walk in the second.
Junior catcher Levi Borders threw out three would-be base stealers and freshman RHP Joe Cavallaro picked off another. Cavallaro (3-1) took his first loss of the season, giving up three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Nick Durazo (2-0) earned the win for the Pirates, throwing three innings of two-hit ball and walking just one while striking out five.
Next up, the Bulls host Stetson for the final time this season on Tuesday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Memphis for a three-game conference series April 17-19.
