Bulls' Road to Omaha Begins in Gainesville
May 25, 2015 | Baseball
Tampa, Fla. (May 25, 2015) — Thirteen years after their last appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Bulls are back on the Road to Omaha as they are headed to the Gainesville Regional as the No. 3 seed.
“It means a lot,” head coach Mark Kingston said. “So many people have been involved in trying to make this a great program through the years and this program has a very proud history and great tradition so we're really proud that after 13 years we can get this program back where we think it belongs and that's in the NCAA Tournament.”
The Bulls (33-24-1) will face 2-seed Florida Atlantic Friday, May 29, at 1 p.m. on ESPN3 at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. The two teams did not meet this season, but have met 12 times in the past with USF holding an 11-1 record over the Owls.
“It's huge for us because waiting these past couple days has been just brutal,” senior shortstop Kyle Teaf said. “I think I grabbed Levi (Borders) but I can't remember. It's pure elation and just awesome.”
This is just the 11th time that the Bulls have made an NCAA appearance, and their first since 2002. The Bulls attended the Tallahassee Regional in 2002, winning two games before falling to host Florida State in the final game of the regional.
USF earned an at-large bid from the American Athletic Conference, joining Tulane, regular-season champion Houston and tournament champion East Carolina. The American boasts the No. 3 overall RPI.
FAU (40-17) earned an at-large bid from Conference USA.
The host and regional's top-seed Florida (44-16) will take on No. 4 FAMU (23-23) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Gators won the SEC Championship over Vanderbilt, while the Rattlers won the MEAC to earn the conference's automatic bid.
The winners will advance to play on Saturday, May 30, at 7 p.m. The losers will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday. All games during the tournament will be aired on either ESPN3 or the SEC Network.
USF has faced both Florida and FAMU this year. The Bulls swept FAMU in Tampa, including a shutout win in the series finale. USF dropped both midweek meetings with Florida this season.
