BLACKSBURG, Va., MAY 8, 2015 – No. 18 USF started its NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship title pursuit with a 4-0 victory over Boise State in the first round Friday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
USF (20-6) will face No. 15 Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the second round after shutting out Boise State for the second time this season.
"The way we finished on all six courts was really impressive," head coach Matt Hill said. "We didn't start particularly well at the beginning, but the way they ended the matches was really clean and good."
USF set the tone for the victory by earning the important doubles point in the program's second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship.
Sasha Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy started with an 8-3 win over Garrett Patton and Abe Hewko in the second position. Boise State stormed back with an 8-6 win in the top spot before Roberto Cid and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz clinched the point with an 8-5 victory over Danny Moyer and Brian Foley in the third position.
"It was big," Hill said. "Boise State was really impressive at No. 2 doubles. It was nice to see Roberto and Ignacio manage the lead very well. It took a lot of pressure off us and put a lot of pressure on them."
USF grabbed a 2-0 lead with Kalyuzhnyy's 6-1, 6-3 win over Hewko in the fifth singles spot. Everth Dzib got the Bulls closer to their second straight trip to the second round of the NCAA Championship with a 6-3, 6-3 victory Moyer in the sixth position. Gonzalez-Muniz secured the match victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Foley in the third singles spot.
"It took a minute for us to get going on some of the courts. Then once they got into they were kind of off and running," Hill said.
