BOX SCORE SEASON STATS
TAMPA, AUG. 29, 2015 – Career days from a pair of upperclassmen pushed the USF volleyball team to its second sweep of the season.
Senior Wylie Devlin took care of the defense while junior Alexus Heidelberg handled offensive duties, as the duo posted career highs Saturday morning, sending USF (2-0) past North Florida (1-1) in three sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-17.
Heidelberg (Winter Garden) appeared untouchable in the match, collecting 11 kills on just 13 swings to record her career-best hitting percentage, .769 – a full .483 points higher than her previous best. Heidelberg's offensive display set the pace for a good overall performance from the Bulls, as the team combined to hit .320, posting 21 kills in the first set alone while holding UNF to a .232 hitting percentage.
It took Devlin (Winter Park) just two sets to tie her old career high of 21 digs, the four-year starter scooping up nearly half of the team's 52 digs, finishing with 25. Devlin's defense helped USF out-dig the Ospreys 52-36, leading to the Bulls' 46-31 advantage in kills.
After a fast-paced first set which saw junior Dakota Hampton (Orland Park, Ill.) collect seven of USF's 21 kills, Heidelberg took the reins. The Winter Park native put down six kills on seven attempts, including the Bulls' last two points as USF headed into the break with a 2-0 lead.
The Bulls' comfortable 10-6 lead in the third set became an insurmountable one when freshman Molly Burkhardt (St. Augustine) started serving. USF's setter served up five consecutive points including four straight aces, helping push the Bulls to their second sweep in 24 hours.
Burkhardt's four aces were part of nine team aces Saturday. She added a team-best 27 assists, distributing the ball to seven different attackers for kills.
Hampton posted a match-high 13 kills, redshirt freshman Clara Payne (Osteen) adding six kills and hitting .455 in the win.
USF plays FIU later today at 6 p.m., finishing up the Panther Challenge.
