TAMPA, SEPT. 12, 2015 – Impressive adjustments against one of the best teams in the nation helped the USF volleyball team put a scare into Nebraska Saturday. The Bulls (2-6 overall) made steady improvements throughout their second match of the Ameritas Players Challenge in Lincoln, Neb., outplaying the Huskers (6-1) throughout most of the third set despite a 13-25, 21-25, 25-27 loss in extra points. After hitting just .081 in the first set as a team, USF's coaching staff switched up its matchups with success in the second. The Bulls, with help from four Priscilla Ehieze (Houston, Texas) kills, hit .306 as a team in the second, committing just one hitting error to keep pace with Nebraska in a four-point loss. USF made more adjustments in the third, and led in the third set until the Huskers managed to tie things up at 19. USF sophomore Joli Holland (Dublin, Calif.) broke a 21-21 tie with her sixth kill of the match, and freshman Nikki Koval served up an ace to put USF up 23-21, but Nebraska found its way back to the lead, eventually putting the Bulls away, 27-25. Junior outside hitter Dakota Hampton (Orland Park, Ill.) led the way both offensively and defensively, putting up 10 kills and 13 digs for the Bulls, while Ehieze added seven kills, hitting .294. Sophomore setter Alex Mendoza (Minneola) added three kills to her team-leading 15 assists, and junior right side hitter Elyse Panick (Chicago, Ill.) did a little bit of everything combining 11 digs with three kills, two blocks and an ace. The Bulls finish the tournament tonight at 6:30 p.m. Eastern against UC-Davis. |
