TAMPA, SEPT. 19, 2015 – A career-high 17 digs along with five kills and a pair of aces highlighted another standout performance from junior Alexus Heidelberg Saturday, as the Bulls fell to Auburn in their first match back in the Sun Dome since the building's remodel.
Playing primarily in the back row, Heidelberg (Winter Garden) chased down nearly six digs per set, but it wasn't enough to slow Auburn's offense, as the Tigers pounded home 41 kills and added 10 blocks to top USF in three sets, 25-17, 25-14, 25-21.
The Bulls played Auburn close in the first set, causing six ties and a lead change before the Tigers used a late offensive surge, picking off 11 of the last 15 points to separate from USF in a 25-17 first-set win.
USF put up another strong fight in the third set, tying things at 18 on redshirt freshman Clara Payne's third block of the set. Auburn again responded, collecting kills on six of its last seven points to take the match.
Junior Dakota Hampton led USF's offense with eight kills, adding 14 digs and a block. The Bulls return to action tonight at 7 p.m., taking on No. 1 Penn State inside the Sun Dome.
