BOX SCORE SEASON STATS
TAMPA, SEPT. 5, 2015 – Extra points continued to be the theme for the USF Classic Saturday afternoon, as the Bulls lost another close set in their second match of the tournament, falling to FGCU 25-15, 25-14, 27-25.
USF (2-3 overall) led most of the way through an energetic third set, out-hitting the Eagles .282-.205 on an inspired five-kill, ten-attack effort from junior Denise Belcher (Apopka), and four big kills from junior Dakota Hampton (Orland Park, Ill.). The Bulls were the first to 20 points, and led 24-22, but a late surge from FGCU helped the Eagles outlast USF, sending the Bulls to their fourth loss of the season.
Thirteen Bulls saw action as USF juggled its lineup around, making adjustments to fill the void left by freshman setter Molly Burkhardt, who landed on an opponent's foot and left the match last night with an ankle injury. Sophomore Alex Mendoza played well in Burkhardt's absence, seeing some time in the front row and posting two kills and a block to go with 14 assists.
Hampton led USF's offense with seven kills, adding 11 digs in the loss. Belcher recorded six kills, with five other players pitching in at least three.
Senior libero Wylie Devlin again led the defense, posting 16 digs. USF finishes off the tournament later tonight, facing Missouri at 7 p.m. in the USF Corral.
