BIRMINGHAM, Ala., JAN. 15, 2016 – Seven Bulls finished in the top three of their events on Friday at the UAB Blazer Invite at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Three USF pole vaulters finished in the top four, led by David Akins who won the event with a height of 16 feet, 4.75 inches (5.00m). Joe Fogarasi tied for second at 15-11 (4.85m) and David Bell was third at 15-5 (4.85m).
Senior Matthew O'Neal captured his second triple jump title in as many meets with a jump of 53-1 (16.18m). O'Neal began the indoor season by winning the GVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 5 with a distance of 51-7.
Senior Bruce Barclay (60m hurdles) and Devin Screen (shot put) each finished third in their respective events. Barclay won his heat with a time of 8.07 to qualify for the finals where he ran the second-best time in school history at 7.95. Screen threw a personal-best 53-3.75 (16.25m). It was the second best throw in school history, six inches shy of the school record of 53-9.25 set by teammate Justin Osking in 2013.
Senior Anderson Charles finished third in the 800m run with a time of 1:55.18.
The women were led by the pole vault crew of Sophia Brown, Stephanie Lambeth and Frances Rice. All three finished tied for fourth place with a height of 11-5.75 (3.50m).
Newcomer Bernicia Hollifield finished sixth in the women's weight throw with a distance of 56-4.5 (17.18m) which ranks sixth in school history.
Making her 2015-16 track debut, sophomore Catherine Blaney finished fifth in the mile with a time of 5:02.81.
USF returns to action next Friday at the Joe Donahue Games in Boston, Mass.
Led by 10th-year head coach Warren Bye, the USF track and field team has produced 21 All-Americans (eight men, 13 women) since 2000 and at least one All-American in seven of the last eight years. Senior Matthew O'Neal is a four-time All-American in the triple jump. The Bulls host the USF Invitational on March 11-12 and the Bulls Invitational on March 17-18. USF is home to the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary.
