Bulls Fall to Owls, 70-63

Box Score

TAMPA, JAN. 31, 2016 – Senior forward Angel Nunez led four Bulls in double-figures with 16 points in USF's 70-63 loss to Temple Sunday afternoon.

Nunez scored 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. It was his fifth-straight game of scoring in double-figures. The New York native also grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Ruben Guerrero recorded the second double-double of his career with 14 points, on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line, and grabbed 10 rebounds.

USF, which fell to 5-18 overall and 2-8 in the American Athletic Conference, dominated the glass with 38 rebounds to just 26 for Temple (12-8, 6-3). It continued a nice trend for the Bulls who have now been outrebounded only three times in their last 13 games.

Senior center Jaleel Cousins had nine rebounds to go with his 10 points. He helped USF's advantage down low with a 32-16 advantage in points in the paint.

A four-point play by freshman guard Jahmal McMurray late in the first half gave the Bulls their largest lead of the game, 27-23, with 3:16 left in the half. McMurray finished the game with 14 points, extending his double-digit scoring streak to 15 games.

The Owls ended the first half on a 12-4 run, capped by a jumper from Quinton DeCosey, to take a 35-31 lead at halftime. DeCosey had 20 of his career-high 30 points in the first half.

Temple scored 10 of the first 14 points of the second half and led by as many as 15 points, 52-37, with just over 13 minutes to play. USF cut the deficit to five points on a layup by Nunez with 2:30 remaining in the game. However, a 3-pointer by reigning conference player of the week, Devin Coleman, gave the Owls a 64-56 lead and forced the Bulls to foul the remainder of the game.

“That was a guy that we had been containing and it was deep,” said head coach Orlando Antigua of Coleman's only points of the game. “If that bounces out, we are going the other way and who knows.”

Temple made 6-of-12 from the free throw line in the final 1:13, which sealed the game and snapped a two-game USF win streak.

“I was proud of our guys' fight and battle,” said Antigua. “To be able to be down 15 and fight back to be down only a couple of possessions shows their resiliency and toughness. I'm proud of them for that.”

For the third consecutive game, USF played just seven players, six of which are on scholarship.

“You don't think about what you don't have,” said Antigua. “You work with what you do and you try to make the best of the situation and that's what we are doing.”

USF shot 45.8 percent from the field, while Temple shot 40.4 percent. The Owls entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in turnovers with 9.5 per game. Temple committed five on Sunday and forced USF to 13, but just four in the second half.

The Bulls will return to action on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Cincinnati.

The USF men's basketball team is led by Orlando Antigua, who is in his second season as the head coach after spending the previous six season as an assistant to Naismith Hall of Fame coach John Calipari. USF has played the toughest schedule in the American Athletic Conference and one of the toughest schedules in the NCAA. USF has retired three numbers in its 45-year history: Chucky Atkins (12), Charlie Bradley (30) and Radenko Dobras (31). The Bulls have earned three NCAA tournament bids and appeared in the NIT eight times. In the 2011-12 season, USF was one win away from an appearance in the Sweet 16.
