TAMPA (Oct. 1, 2017)
— For the second straight game, the USF women's soccer team went ahead early and never trailed in a 3-0 conference win over Tulsa on Sunday.
Just two minutes into the match, sophomore
Evelyne Viens (L'ancienne-Lorette, Canada) scored her seventh goal of the season, when she picked up a pass from sophomore
Sabrina Wagner (New Port Richey, Fla.) and dribbled past three defenders to put the ball to the right of Tulsa's keeper.
In the 25
th minute, Wagner was hungry for another scoring opportunity and sent a long pass to sophomore midfielder
Kylee Burroughs (Plant City, Fla.), who scored from the right side in USF's Pink Game.
Leading, 2-0, head coach
Denise Schilte-Brown was able to show the depth of her roster, playing 23 different Bulls. Freshman forward
Leah Ferlin (Jacksonville, Fla.) capped off USF's impressive performance with a goal in the 71st minute.
Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on what the Pink Game means:
"My brother's mother-in-law passed of breast cancer and I just remember the fight, and I know a lot of the fight is mental. We just talked about honoring that game, keeping our heads and fighting hard. Keeping that mental toughness that all cancer patients must go through that we can never understand or fathom. I think breast cancer hits everyone, and everyone knows someone who has survived or died and it was really hard. Every time we do this game, it's also a mental anguish because it's something that we just need to continue to battle."
Schilte-Brown on early scoring…
"It's putting years back on my life. Two games getting on the board early, and it isn't just the scoring. It's their reaction time, and their movement and how hard they're working. Statistically, that's a big time in the game to capitalize, and I think they did a really good job."
Schilte-Brown on Wagner's two assists…
"She has been incredible all year, and these stats don't even show you the whole picture. From the day she got here, she has been starting and playing all those minutes and having that kind of impact, today they just showed on the board. She has really been that good all year."
Schilte-Brown on Ferlin's goal…
"Amazing left-footed shot. She had a great first half and the second half, I felt like she was losing a bit of ground and then she scored that amazing goal and I thought, 'Well, all is forgiven.' She's so dangerous. She can shoot right foot, left foot, she can score with her head and she's willing to work hard. What a great future."
Schilte-Brown on the offense…
"This is the team that you always want. As a coach, you're always waiting for the team that has four or five attackers that are dangerous. Finally, we have Evelyne, who is an incredible goal scorer. But if all of the attention is on her, it's hard to be productive. Now, with everyone else contributing it really opens up and she gets to be dynamic, Aubrey is, Sabrina is, Leah is, Kylee is and we really have some depth in that area."
Leah Ferlin on her goal…
"It was so great. I've been out most of the season due to injury, and it was really great to come in and get a goal and make a difference."
Ferlin on the offense…
"I feel like they've really connected, especially while I was out, but I've been able to come in and connect with people. This was my first time up top with Evelyne, so it was different, but I think we work together and we're getting there."
