Bulls Drop Three-Set Match to Huskies

TAMPA, Oct. 15, 2017 – The USF volleyball team battled in a close straight-sets loss to UConn Sunday afternoon (17-25, 20-25, 21-25).  

In the opening set, the Bulls (7-11, 2-6 The American) went up 6-3 following s service ace from junior Maria McLamb (Wesley Chapel, Fla.). The Huskies (10-10, 3-5 The American) responded with a 11-3 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Bulls cut the deficit to two after a Joli Holland (Dublin, Calif.) kill, making it 17-15. But UConn finished the set on a 8-2 run to win 25-17.
 
The second set was back-and-forth with 14 ties and four lead changes. After a Doris Carter (Lexington, Ky.) kill made it 20-19 in favor of UConn, the Huskies utilized a 5-1 run to take the set, 25-20.
 
The third set was close midway through, as there were eight ties and four early lead changes. With the score tied 13-13, a 4-0 UConn run created the largest lead for either side of the set. USF got to within two points five separate times on kills from four different players, but the Huskies were able to match each point, winning the final set, 25-21.   

KEY STATS
  • Carter finished with a team-best 10 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. It was her seventh double-digit kill outing of the season and her second-straight contest hitting at a clip above .300.
  • Senior setter Alex Mendoza (Minneola, Fla.) tallied 32 assists and is now at 2,858 for her career (sixth all-time). She recorded 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.
  • Holland had nine kills on 17 attempts (.471 hitting percentage) and added three block assists.
     
UP NEXT
The Bulls head back on the road for matches at Tulane Friday then at  Houston Sunday.   

About USF Volleyball
In addition to 10 newcomers, USF returns a large core of talent for 2017, led by senior setter Alex Mendoza, who surpassed the 2,000 assist total in 2016 and posted a team-high 1,125 helpers. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Clara Payne finished second on the team with 340 points and senior middle blocker Joli Holland finished fourth with 251.5 points. The Bulls are guided by sixth-year head coach Courtney Draper.
