TAMPA (Oct. 19, 2017)
— Freshmen
Leah Ferlin (Jacksonville, Fla.) and
Sabrina Wagner (New Port Ritchey, Fla.) fueled the USF women's soccer team's 1-0 shutout win over Temple Thursday night, marking the programs fifth straight win.
USF put the offensive pressure on early, but both teams remained scoreless going into the second half. After numerous close attempts, Wagner sent a pass from outside the box at the lower-left corner, up to the top of the box where Ferlin turned a quick, low shot and snuck it past the Temple Keeper in the 63
rd minute.
The Bulls defense kept a close eye on Temple, limiting them to just eight shots, four on goal, all of which were saved by senior keeper
Kat Elliott (Bradenton, Fla.).
Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte Brown on five straight…
"I'm proud of my team. Temple is never easy, and for us, never easy. It's a tough style of game that they play, and the girls battled through and came out on top."
Head coach Denise Schilte Brown on hard work from the offense…
"I felt like they earned the goal. We were generating chance after chance, and a lot of our opportunities went just to the side of the net. I think Evelyne hit five just to the side of the net. We were one mistake away from tying that game."
Head coach Denise Schilte Brown on the defense…
"The defenders had to be very focused in the game, because it was very slow in the build. As soon as we would lose the ball, they had to switch onto being strong defenders right away because Temple was going to hit it forward. That wasn't easy, so I was very proud of their focus for 90 minutes and their ability to stay intense even though the game was a bit of a roller-coaster in terms of intensity."
Freshman forward Leah Ferlin on her goal…
"It was really exciting to be able to come in and get that goal. I felt like up top we were working really hard and Sabrina, as fast as she is, was able to run around the defender, play it in and get a really good ball."
