TAMPA, Oct. 19, 2017 – The University of South Florida volleyball team gets set for a pair of road conference matches, taking on Tulane Friday followed by Houston on Sunday.
The Bulls (7-11, 2-6 The American) dropped two closely contested tilts over the weekend in Tampa. Senior setter
Alex Mendoza (Minneola, Fla.) notched her seventh double-double against UConn on Sunday with 32 assists and 10 digs. She averaged 10.7 digs per set in the weekend's two matches.
Freshman outside hitter
Doris Carter (Lexington, Ky.) had her most efficient weekend of the season, hitting .347. She tallied 10 kills against the Huskies on Sunday, her seventh double-digit kill outing of the year.
THE OPPONENTS
Tulane: The Green Wave are in the top-three in The American in team digs and team kills and sit first in team assists and service aces. Five Tulane players have more than 150 kills on the year, led by juniors Hannah Shaw and Dayna Kern with 176 and 175 kills, respectively. Senior setter Justine Bowers leads the team with 506 assists and leads the conference with 30 aces. Sophomore libero Kaylie McHugh is third in the league with 388 digs on the season.
Houston: The Cougars have been solid defensively, sitting fourth in the league allowing a .182 opponent hitting percentage. Sophomore libero Katie Karbo is third in The American with 5.28 digs per set. Senior outside hitter Brianna Lynch leads the team with 164 kills and freshman setter Abby Irvine has a team-high 370 assists. The Cougars lead the conference with 1.54 service aces per set.
NOTABLES
- The Bulls are third in The American with 1.28 aces per set and 16.92 digs per set.
- Redshirt-junior Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) and senior Priscilla Ehieze (Houston) are tied for the team lead with 143 kills apiece.
- Junior outside hitter Reagan Davey (Ocala, Fla.) has 138 kills on the year and Carter has 134.
- Senior outside hitter Joli Holland (Dublin, Calif.) is up to 103 kills this season, hitting a team-high .323.
- Mendoza is third in the league with 9.80 assists per set. She sits sixth with 637 total assists.
- USF owns a 40-20 combined record against Tulane and Houston. The Bulls are 27-7 against the Green Wave
About USF Volleyball
In addition to 10 newcomers, USF returns a large core of talent for 2017, led by senior setter Alex Mendoza, who surpassed the 2,000 assist total in 2016 and posted a team-high 1,125 helpers. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Clara Payne finished second on the team with 340 points and senior middle blocker Joli Holland finished fourth with 251.5 points. The Bulls are guided by sixth-year head coach Courtney Draper.
