TAMPA, Oct. 5, 2017 – The University of South Florida volleyball team looks to make it back-to-back wins, as it remains on the road for matches at SMU and at Tulsa this weekend.

The Bulls (6-8, 1-3 The American) won their first conference game in a five-set thriller Sunday at Memphis. For the second time this season, at least four Bulls reached double-digit kills. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) recorded a career-best 14 kills along with seven total blocks. Freshman outside hitter Doris Carter (Lexington, Ky.) had 13 kills, senior middle blocker Joli Holland (Dublin, Calif.) had 11 kills and outside hitter Reagan Davey (Ocala, Fla.) had 11 with five service aces. Senior setter Alex Mendoza (Minneola, Fla.) tallied 51 assists and freshman libero Faby Ribas (Orlando) had her best match with 25 digs.  
 
THE OPPONENTS

SMU: The Mustangs are 4-0 in The American and tied for first. Senior outside hitter Lauren Mills sits fourth in the league with 222 kills. Sophomore setter Kendall Patterson leads the conference with 590 total assists and sits second with 11.62 assists per set. Five Mustangs have more than 100 digs on the year, as the team leads The American with 17.40 digs per set. SMU also leads the league in team kills (820) and total blocks (142).  
 
Tulsa: The Golden Hurricane (7-9, 1-3 The American) are led by outside hitter Emily Thorson. The 6-foot-2 junior has done it all offensively, leading the team while sitting second in the conference in total kills (246), points (261), kills per set (3.90) and attacks per set (12.48). Sophomore libero Taylor Horsfall sits third in The American with 5.38 digs per set, but leads the league and ranks 18th nationally with 339 total digs.  

NOTABLES
  • The Bulls sit third in The American with 1.50 aces per set and second with 16.46 digs per set.
  • Senior outside hitter Priscilla Ehieze (Houston) leads the Bulls with 115 kills.
  • Payne is second on the team with 112 kills and second in the league with a .352 hitting percentage.
  • Mendoza sits sixth all-time in program history with 2,706 career assists. She has 481 assists on the season.   
  • Davey is third in the conference with 0.38 aces per set.
About USF Volleyball
In addition to 10 newcomers, USF returns a large core of talent for 2017, led by senior setter Alex Mendoza, who surpassed the 2,000 assist total in 2016 and posted a team-high 1,125 helpers. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Clara Payne finished second on the team with 340 points and senior middle blocker Joli Holland finished fourth with 251.5 points. The Bulls are guided by sixth-year head coach Courtney Draper.
