The opening set went back-and-forth with seven ties and four lead changes midway through. After the seventh tie of the opening set, the Cougars went on a 4-0 run to take an 18-14 edge. The Bulls (10-15, 5-10 The American) cut the deficit to one five times, but Houston took the set, 25-23.

Following a Jaeden Brown (Hollywood, Fla.) kill, USF trailed 15-13 in the second set. The Cougars used another 4-0 run to take a 19-13 lead. The Bulls got no closer than three, as Houston took the set, 25-19.
