TAMPA, Nov. 2, 2017 – The University of South Florida volleyball team begins its second-to-last road weekend at ECU Friday at 7:00 p.m. before facing Cincinnati Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Bulls (9-13, 4-8 The American) split their sixth weekend of conference action. USF defeated Memphis at home on Oct. 27 thanks to a season-high 24 block assists and 13 total blocks. The Bulls fell to the conference's top team in now-No. 18 Wichita St. on Oct. 29.
Senior setter
Alex Mendoza (Minneola, Fla.) moved into fifth place on USF's all-time assist list in Friday's win vs. Memphis. She is sixth in the league with 9.73 assists per set and 759 total assists.
THE OPPONENTS
ECU: The Pirates opened conference play 7-2, but have dropped three-straight. Sitting at 16-9 overall, ECU sits second in The American in team kills (1,218) and third in digs (1,485), assists (1,129) and hitting percentage (0.236). Senior outside hitter Lael Ceriani leads the team with 293, followed by freshman Bri Wood with 249 and senior Natalie Montini with 232 kills. Montini is third in the conference with a 0.338 hitting percentage. Sophomore libero Brandee Markwith is second in the league with 482 digs.
Cincinnati: The Bearcats are just 10-14 on the year but have found much more success during conference play with an 8-4 record. Junior outside hitter Carly Nolan has powered the recent surge. She has 365 total kills and leads The American in kills per set (4.10), points (411) and points per set (4.62). Junior setter Jade Tingelhoff is third in the conference with 876 assists. Cincinnati leads the league with 211 total blocks.
NOTABLES
- The Bulls are third in The American with 1.31 aces per set and fourth with 16.82 digs per set.
- Redshirt-junior Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) leads the Bulls with 173 kills and a .304 hitting percentage. She has 87 total blocks on the year and is sixth in the conference with 1.12 blocks per set.
- Freshman Doris Carter (Lexington, Ky.) is second on the team with 171 and has reached double-digit kills a team-high 10 times.
- Junior outside hitter Reagan Davey (Ocala, Fla.) and senior Priscilla Ehieze (Houston) are tied for third on the team with 169 kills apiece.
- The Bulls lead the Pirates 8-3 in their all-time series.
About USF Volleyball
In addition to 10 newcomers, USF returns a large core of talent for 2017, led by senior setter Alex Mendoza, who surpassed the 2,000 assist total in 2016 and posted a team-high 1,125 helpers. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Clara Payne finished second on the team with 340 points and senior middle blocker Joli Holland finished fourth with 251.5 points. The Bulls are guided by sixth-year head coach Courtney Draper.
