TAMPA, Nov. 9, 2017 – The University of South Florida volleyball team heads into its final home weekend, hosting Houston Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Tulane Sunday at noon.
The Bulls (10-14, 5-9 The American) will honor their five-member senior class prior to Sunday's match. Both contests can be seen on Facebook Live.
USF picked up its 10
th win of the year at Cincinnati on Nov. 5. After dropping the second and third set, the Bulls came back in dramatic fashion to earn their third five-set win of the year.
Senior setter
Alex Mendoza (Minneola, Fla.) became just the fifth player in program history to reach 3,000 career assists in the win against Cincinnati. Junior setter
Briana Stowell (Orlando) was stellar last weekend, totaling 59 assists, as she recorded her first double-double against the Bearcats (21 assists, 11 digs).
THE OPPONENTS
Houston: The Cougars lead the conference in services aces per set with 1.53. Seniors Brianna Gardner and Sarah Afflerbaugh have 29 and 27 aces and 166 and 182 kills, respectively. Senior Brianna Lynch leads the Cougars with 215 kills. Sophomore libero Katie Karbo is third in The American with 5.32 digs per set.
Tulane: The Green Wave sit right behind Houston with 1.41 aces per set. Senior setter Justine Bowers leads the league with 34 aces and is the only player in the conference with a triple-double this season. She has 715 assists, 64 kills and 160 digs. Collectively, Tulane leads the conference with 1,258 total assists. The Green Wave is led offensively by junior Dayna Kern, who has 226 kills. She also has a team-best 82 blocks.
NOTABLES
- The Bulls are third in The American with 1.23 aces per set and fifth with 16.62 digs per set.
- Freshman Doris Carter (Lexington, Ky.) now leads the team with 195 kills on the year.
- Mendoza is averaging 9.10 assists per set.
- Redshirt-junior Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) is second on the squad with 187 kills and leads the team with a .294 hitting percentage and 92 blocks.
- Senior outside hitter Priscilla Ehieze (Houston) has 184 kills and junior outside hitter Reagan Davey (Ocala, Fla.) has 181.
- USF has over 100 digs from seven different players, led by junior Maria McLamb (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) with 306.
- The Bulls hold a combined 41-21 record against the Cougars and Green Wave.
About USF Volleyball
In addition to 10 newcomers, USF returns a large core of talent for 2017, led by senior setter Alex Mendoza, who surpassed the 2,000 assist total in 2016 and posted a team-high 1,125 helpers. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Clara Payne finished second on the team with 340 points and senior middle blocker Joli Holland finished fourth with 251.5 points. The Bulls are guided by sixth-year head coach Courtney Draper.
