Efficient Bulls Win Fourth In a Row to Begin Weekend at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, NOVEMBER 1, 2018 – The USF volleyball team won its fourth-straight match with its second-straight four-set victory, defeating Temple Thursday night (22-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-21).

The Bulls (18-7, 7-5 The American) got off to a slow start, but came on stronger late in the first set before dropping it to the Owls (5-19, 2-10 The American). Junior Jac'cara Walker (Gainesville, Fla.) began to assert herself in a dominant second set with six kills, as USF erupted for a 25-13 win.

Walker had eight kills in the third set, while redshirt senior Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) and sophomore Jaeden Brown (Hollywood, Fla.) were also key, helping the Bulls take a 2-1 lead. Another complete effort in the fourth gave USF a third-straight set and fourth-straight win.

Head coach Courtney Draper on the slow start being a thing of the past the rest of the match:
"We started a little but came alive towards the end of the first set and never looked back. We sided out very well and our passing was strong."

Coach Draper discusses the offenses firepower throughout the night:
"We were truly firing on all cylinders. Jac'cara was unstoppable and made some great digs. Our middies were efficient and both setters did a great job executing the game plan, creating a fluid offense."

  • Walker tallied 21 kills and hit .315.

  • Senior setter Briana Stowell (Orlando) had 39 assists, six kills and eight digs.
  • Redshirt sophomore Nyemba Musemuna (Avon, Ind.) recorded five blocks in the win.

Led by redshirt senior middle blocker Clara Payne, who paced the team with 300 points and finished seventh in The American with a .290 hitting percentage, USF and seventh-year head coach Courtney Draper are excited for 2018. Senior setter Briana Stowell finished second on the team in 2017 with 243 assists and averaged 22.3 per match in the final month of the year. The Bulls are welcoming six new faces to the roster, with five talented freshmen and a skilled outside hitter coming from Marshall University.
