Bulls Drop Close Road Tilt at UConn Saturday

STORRS, CONN., NOVEMBER 3, 2018 – The USF volleyball team's four-match win streak came to a halt Saturday at UConn with a four-set defeat (15-25, 25-16, 23-25, 23-25).

After the Huskies (12-14, 4-9 The American) took the opening set, 25-15, the Bulls (18-8, 7-6 The American) responded with a big margin of their own, winning the second set, 25-16. USF had 11 kills and nine blocks in the frame.

The third set was back-and-forth with eight ties and four lead changes. Tied 23-23, UConn scored the final two points. The fourth set was very similar to the third, as there were seven ties and three lead changes. Redshirt senior Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) recorded her seventh block of the day to give the Bulls a 21-19 edge in the fourth, but a 6-2 run gave the Huskies the win.

Quotables

Head coach Courtney Draper on the loss:
"UConn was more aggressive offensively than we were today. Jac'cara Walker being out forced us to alter our lineup, which put us in a tough situation."

Coach Draper on the offense as a whole:
"Our middles were very impressive once again, but we did not pass well enough to give them the ball as much as we needed to for us to be successful. We needed more production from our pins for a different outcome."

Notables
  • Sophomore Jaeden Brown (Hollywood, Fla.) recorded a team high 12 kills, hitting a contest best .375. She had four blocks.
  • Payne tallied eight kills in addition to her seven stuffs.
  • Freshman Lindsey Pliapol (Daytona Beach, Fla.) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.
  • Freshman setter Lauren LaBeck (Chicago) had 29 assists, five kills and five digs.
Up Next
The Bulls are back in Tampa for the final time this season, hosting ECU and Cincinnati next weekend. USF will honor its senior class against the Bearcats on Nov. 11.
