Skublak, Zis, Flanagan Named All-Conference, Gallina to All-Rookie Team
PROVIDENCE, R.I., Nov. 6, 2018–The American Athletic Conference all-conference teams have been released by the league Tuesday, with USF senior
Tomasz Skublak highlighting the honors for the Bulls with first-team all-conference accolades.
Junior midfielder
Alex Zis, who leads the team in points and assists, was selected second team all-AAC, alongside teammate
Avionne Flanagan, a sophomore defender.
Henrique Gallina, a freshman defender, was named to the All-Rookie team.
Skublak (Hamilton, Canada) netted 8 goals and added an assist for USF in the regular season, leading USF with goals scored. He also led the Bulls with game winning goals this season with four, including two double-overtime golden goals. Skublak took 44 shots on the year with 18 coming on frame. The senior played in all 16 games in the green and gold this season and was twice named AAC Offensive Player of the Week. Skublak's team-leading eight goals is good enough for a third-place ranking in the league. He also earned two brace's this season, scoring two goals against Tulsa and another pair at Cincinnati.
Zis (Oakville, Canada), led the team in points with 19 this season, coming on five goals and nine assists. Zis, a commander in the midfield, leads the American in assists and assists per game, with 9 and .56 respectively. In the last 11 matches of the season, Zis registered an assist in all but two of them. He recorded a brace on the season against FAU scoring four points on five shots in USF's eventual 4-1 victory. He took three penalty kicks for USF on the year and earned goals for the Bulls on all three. He played in all 16 games in the green and gold, starting in 11 of them.
Flanagan, a fierce defender from Baltimore, Md., played in all 16 games for the Bulls and started in 15 of them. The sophomore scored two goals on the season coming from 13 shots, nine of which were on frame. His goal against FAU marked his first game-winner and was a crucial turning point for USF, which went on to be undefeated for the next five-of-six games. Flanagan often worked in tandem with
Alex Zis, and created two of Zis' penalty kick opportunities, drawing fouls in the box against FAU and FGCU. Flanagan recorded over 1100 minutes for USF including four games where he played the duration of the match, three of which were double-overtime games.
Gallina, a freshman from Atibaia, Brazil, saw action in 14 games for the Bulls, and started all 14 of those matches. Gallina's presence at centerback exhausted every eligible moment of play for the Bulls. Gallina only missed the field due to ejections, and amassed almost 1300 minutes in the green and gold in his 14 games. In addition to his outstanding defensive duties, the rookie earned a goal against Stetson, the first of his career, which was the game-winner over the Hatters. His first career points came on an assist in USF's win over FAU back in September. He took 12 shots on the season with five on frame.
Skublak, Zis, Flanagan, and Gallina will return in action tonight against Memphis in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament at 4:30 p.m.
