Bulls Upset No. 18 Michigan, Eriksen Reaches 900 Wins against UAB

USF stunned No. 18 Michigan in a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon before defeating UAB, 6-3, for head coach Ken Eriksen’s 900th career win, all at USF.

TAMPA (Feb. 10, 2018) – The Bulls stunned No. 18 Michigan, 3-2, Saturday afternoon before staging a 6-3 comeback victory over UAB to deliver head coach Ken Eriksen's 900th career win.

Eriksen reached the incredible 900-win milestone in Saturday's Wilson DeMarini Night Cap when the Bulls powered back twice to defeat UAB, 6-3, and remain undefeated (4-0).
The Blazers jumped ahead early with a leadoff double followed by a single and a walk to load the bases, but ended the first inning with one run and two stranded.

USF went three scoreless frames before a pair of singles from Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio) and Mia Fung (Tampa, Fla.), put runners on first and second. Sophomore Brooke Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.) hit a two-RBI double to give USF the lead for the first time.

UAB regained the lead in the top of the fifth, but the Bulls responded with four in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. A Fung single, followed by a Cassidy Boyle (Buchanan, N.Y.) double helped kick-start the Bulls offensive production as they batted around in route to a 6-3 win.

Senior JoJo McGill (Gainesville, Fla.) earned her second win of the season in 1.1 innings of work, tallying one strikeout.

A beautiful Saturday afternoon set the tone for the Bulls to upset Michigan for the second straight season. USF used early-inning runs and held the Wolverines scoreless through three innings to earn the win. Junior Samantha Worrell (Oviedo, Fla.) connected on RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to give USF the lead and never trailed. In the second
inning, Boyle would hit a two-run homer over the left field fence, her first this season.

Freshman Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) earned her first career win in her second start, and McGill claimed the save after stifling an attempt by Michigan, leaving the possible tying runner stranded to end the game.

Quotable:

Head coach Ken Eriksen
On 900 wins:
"I'm so happy it was at home. I don't really count them, but when these things come up, you're hoping to share them with the fans and the families of the players and alumni that are here. I knew when we knocked out Michigan today we had a shot to do it tonight which was good. It wasn't on my mind in all honesty during the ball game."

On the pitching staff:
"Jess Moore has got those pitchers in a great mental state – 'this is your job and this is what you do.' We're going to be that type of person, we're going to be that type of team and it's working so far."
