TAMPA (Feb. 13, 2018) – The Bulls will have their first road test as they travel to Fort Myers, Fla., for a Valentine's Day doubleheader.
USF
(rv) had an impressive start to the season, winning four straight with a loss to No. 2 Florida to cap off the weekend. The Bulls upset No. 18 Michigan on Saturday afternoon, and went on to defeat UAB in head coach
Ken Eriksen's 900
th career win.
Freshman
Georgina Corrick earned her first career win in the upset over Michigan, and turned in 10 total strikeouts in 10 innings pitched over the weekend. The Sanford, Fla., native finished the weekend with a 1.40 ERA. Senior JoJo McGill (Gainesville, Fla.) also had an impressive weekend finishing 2-0 with two saves.
Amber Atkinson (Citrus, Fla.) worked a .625 average with three RBI in eight at-bats. The senior posted her first home run as a Bull against Florida, driving in one of only three runs against the Gators this season. Junior
Samantha Worrell helped USF to its first win of the Wilson DeMarini tournament with a perfect 3-for-3 outing and three RBI in a 5-4 route of Georgia State.
THE OPPONENT
FGCU
FGCU remains undefeated (4-0) after its Kickoff Classic last weekend. The Eagles outscored opponents, 24-11, and posted a .336 team average.
The Bulls and Eagles have met eight times since the first meeting in 2008. After dropping the first two meetings, USF has won the last eight to lead the series, 8-2. One of the most historic meetings came in 2012, when the Bulls topped FGCU to move on to the championship game of the NCAA Regional in Gainesville. The teams met for a doubleheader last season when the Bulls came out with a pair of wins, 1-0 and 9-2, last April.
NOTABLE
- USF out-hit opponents, 38-35, over the weekend.
- The Bulls combined for 10 total multiple-base hits.
- All six of USF's pitchers saw action this weekend, led by freshman Georgina Corrick and senior JoJo McGill.
- Head coach Ken Eriksen now has 900 wins.
