CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 2, 2018) – The USF softball team defeated Wisconsin and Western Michigan to open the Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., on Friday night.
Freshman
Georgina Corrick set a new career high in strikeouts with 12, and sophomore
Brooke Hartman powered USF to a 6-5 walk-off win over Western Michigan.
USF 3, Wisconsin 1
The Bulls (9-12) went hard right out of the gate against the Badgers (8-8). Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) tossed a complete game striking out 12, and senior
Amber Atkinson (Citrus, Fla.) batted in the first run to give USF an early 1-0 lead.
Stellar base running and a few Wisconsin errors in the second inning helped the Bulls add two more runs including an RBI single by senior
Lauren Evans (Land O' Lakes, Fla.), sealing USF's 3-1 victory.
USF 6, Western Michigan 5
Western Michigan (5-8) got an early start against USF in the first inning with two runs on four hits. The Broncos were able to hold the Bulls scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.) hit her first homerun this season for two RBI, to tie up the game, 2-2.
By the top of the seventh inning, the Broncos had regained the lead, 5-2. The Bulls loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and redshirt freshman
Brooke Leistl (Valrico, Fla.) was thrown out at home in a fielder's choice. USF went on to score four runs with two outs in a thrilling comeback win. Hartman came in at the perfect moment to slam an RBI single into right field for the game-winning sixth run.
