Leadoff Home Run by Evans Sparks Offense in USF's 8-0 Win Over UConn

TAMPA (March 23, 2018) –  Senior Lauren Evans hit a leadoff home run to spark USF's offense in an 8-0 shutout over UConn to kick off conference play on Friday. Freshman Georgina Corrick kept the Huskies at zero allowing just one hit in six innings.

Evans (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) set the tone with her home run in the first at-bat of conference play, and went a perfect 2-for-2 with four runs and one RBI. USF scattered nine hits including a pair of doubles from Macy Cook and one from sophomore Brooke Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.) who recorded three RBI. Junior Lindsey Devitt went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.

Quotable
Assistant Coach Jessica Moore on
"I thought the team did really well today. Lauren set the tone coming out and hitting the leadoff home run as well as Georgina coming out and getting those first three outs. We did really well getting the leadoff runners out today. Georgina was hitting her spots pretty well, defense played pretty flawlessly. If we can keep getting those same approaches, we're going to do okay."

On Corrick's 1-hit performance…
"She's got a good mix. You have to respect both sides of the plate, and as a pitcher when you can do that you can make them uncomfortable. So, you have to give Georgina respect, same with the rest of our pitching staff. I think she kept them uncomfortable. They couldn't sit one way or another, and she just executed."

On Evans and Cook perfect at the plate…
"They did really well. A couple of them have been putting in some good work such as Lauren and Macy in practice. It's good to see those guys get payoff when they feel like they have been struggling a little bit seeing balls. It's good for them to come out and get some good results, and hopefully that will keep spreading to the rest of our team as well."
