HOUSTON, TX, APRIL 8, 2018 – The University of South Florida baseball dropped Sunday's back-and-forth battle with Houston 9-8, losing its first series since opening weekend.
The Bulls (21-11, 5-4 The American) and Cougars (19-12, 6-3 The American) were tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the third. But two walks brought up Joe Davis, who hit a towering homer to left, making it 5-2.
USF got two back in the fourth on RBI singles from
David Villar (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and
Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) before Houston added one in the bottom half, making it 6-4 in the fifth.
The Bulls loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth, leading to a
Coco Montes (Miami) sac fly, making it 6-5. In the next at-bat,
Duke Stunkel Jr. (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) singled to tie things up. Immediately after, Villar gave USF a 7-6 lead with an RBI single, scoring
Tyler Dietrich (Naples, Fla.).
USF had a walk and three-straight infield singles in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-6. Houston, however, retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs on three hits, making it 9-8.
