Men’s Basketball Adds Florida Native Zack Dawson
TAMPA, May 18, 2018 – University of South Florida head men's basketball coach Brian Gregory and his staff announced the addition of 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard Zack Dawson to the Bulls on Friday.
"We are excited to welcome Zack back home to Florida as a member of the Bulls family," Gregory said. "He is a dynamic and versatile guard who can impact the game in a variety of ways. Zack comes from one of the best high school programs in the state, South Miami High School, so he immediately brings a championship attitude here to the University of South Florida."
A native of Miami, Fla., Dawson joins the Bulls after spending his freshman season at Oklahoma State. He will sit out the 2018-19 season. Dawson appeared in five games in 2017-18 at Oklahoma State, averaging 4.4 points, 1.6 assists and 0.8 rebounds per game. His best game for the Cowboys came on Nov. 16 against Oral Roberts, when he scored 11 points in 15 minutes of action.
As a member of the 2017 class out of South Miami, Dawson was rated as a consensus four-star prospect by ESPN, 247 Sports and Rivals. ESPN rated him as the No. 76 prospect on the ESPN 100 and the No. 3 prospect out of Florida.
Dawson averaged 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game as a junior while leading South Miami to the Class 8A state semifinals. Following his junior season, he was named Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Class 8A first team all-state and to the Miami Herald All-Dade County first team. He chose to attend Oklahoma State as a freshman over offers from Louisville, Iowa State, Arizona, Kansas State, TCU and South Carolina, among other offers.
Dawson is the fifth member of Gregory's 2018 signing class. He joins point guard Xavier Castaneda (Chicago, Ill.), center Michael Durr (Atlanta, Ga.), guard Rashun Williams (Edison, Ga.) and forward Antun Maricevic (Zagreb, Croatia) in the class.
