TAMPA, JULY 6, 2018 – Former USF baseball standouts are moving on up in the pro ranks while first-round pick Shane McClanahan has officially joined the Tampa Bay Rays.

Former USF closer Andrew Perez is up in the Class-A South Atlantic League after going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in four appearances in the Pioneer League (rookie level). An eighth-round pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2018, Perez struck out two batters in 2.0 scoreless innings to make an impressive debut for the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday.

Right-hander Joe Cavallaro was promoted from the Class-A South Atlantic League to the Double-A Eastern League this week. A 24th-round draft pick by the N.Y. Mets in 2017, Cavallaro is a combined 8-2 with a 2.51 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 82.1 innings at two levels this season.

McClanahan broke the news on reaching an agreement with the Rays via Twitter on Friday,  hours before the MLB's 5 p.m. deadline for signing draft picks. The third-highest draft choice in USF history was picked 31st overall by the Rays in June after finishing second nationally in 2018 with 14.15 strikeouts per nine innings as a redshirt sophomore with the Bulls.
