October 05, 2019 | Cross Country
TAMPA, Fla., OCT. 5, 2019 – Freshman Alexandra Weir placed first overall and the USF cross country team won both the men's and women's races Saturday morning at the USF Invitational at The Claw.
Weir (Toronto, Ontario) turned in a time of 18:42.78 in the 5K race to finish in the top six for the third consecutive meet. Weir placed fifth at the FGCU Invitational in the opening race of the season and most recently took sixth at the Mountain Dew Invitational on Sept. 14.
Fellow freshman Alec Latzke (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was the top finisher for the men by placing third overall with a time of 16:18.27.
"It's always great to protect your home," USF distance coach Damon Griffiths said. "Both teams made positive strides forward today and that will give them a huge confidence boost heading into the next part of our season. Alexandra took control of the race early and never looked back. I am pleased with the time spread between our second and sixth runners, but we still have a lot of room for improvement. There was a lot of positive things in the men's race today. Alec and Ben set the tone early."
USF returns to action Friday at 7:40 a.m. when the Bulls travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take part in the FSU Invitational.
