TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 22, 2019 – The No. 11 University of South Florida women's soccer team will move on to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history after defeating Washington, 2-0, Friday to advance to the Sweet 16.
Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec, Canada) continued her dominant postseason, scoring both of USF's goals to seal the victory.
It was Viens' fourth consecutive multi-goal game, scoring nine goals between two games in both the American Athletic Conference tournament and the NCAA tournament.
Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) also made seven saves to preserve the clean sheet, setting a season-high.
Both teams got opportunities in the early stages of the game. Martinez made four saves in the first 20 minutes of the game, while USF also had four shots in the same time span.
Viens opened up the scoring in the 25
th minute.
Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) dribbled the ball into the far corner, and found Viens in front of the net. The senior took the shot, which grazed the fingertips of the Washington goalkeeper on its way to the back of the net to give USF the 1-0 lead heading into the break.
On the other side of halftime, Viens wasted no time to extend the Bulls' lead to two. Getting a pass entering the Washington defensive third, Viens met two defenders at the top of the box. In the battle for the ball, all three were tripped up, but the Canadian recovered first and beat the Huskies goalkeeper to extend the lead to 2-0.
Following USF's second goal, Washington started to apply pressure. Martinez made two saves before a foul in the box gave the Huskies a chance to get on the board with a penalty kick. Washington's Summer Yates took the kick, but Martinez would not be beat, diving to make the save and preserve the 2-0 victory.
USF was outshot for the first time this season. The Bulls had been the better in the shot column in every game this season, totaling a plus-211 shot advantage before today's game.
