Barroso-Campos Extends Unbeaten Streak, 5-0, with Ranked Win in Bulls' Loss to No.11 Baylor

USF men's tennis senior No. 43 Alberto Barroso-Campos defeated No. 33 Johannes Schretter in Bulls' loss to No. 11 Baylor

WACO, Texas, FEB. 1, 2019–  For the second time in three years, USF's No. 43 Alberto Barroso-Campos defeated Baylor's No. 33 Johanne's Schretter. The Bulls ultimately dropped their match to the Bears, 6-1.

Senior Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) battled to three sets against Schretter in the pair's second meeting in three years. Barroso-Campos picked up wins in both matches, with his win this season coming in three sets, handing Schretter his first singles loss of his senior season. Barroso-Campos dropped a 6-3 decision to Schretter in the first set, but won 6-3 in the second. The ranked opponents battled in a super tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, where Barroso-Campos picked up a close 10-8 win. Unfortunately, the win came too late as the Bears had already clinched the match.

Baylor won the doubles point in a clean sweep of three courts, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, on courts one, two and three, respectively.

Matias Soto picked up the first singles win for the Bears on court three in a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of junior Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.). Sean Burnette (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) started in his first singles match of the season, but fell, 6-0, 6-2 on court six to Baylor's Kyrylo Tsygura. Sven Lah clinched the match for Baylor, taking down Yatsuk, 6-2, 6-2 on court four.

Quotable

Head coach, Ashley Fisher, on the tough loss and the matches ahead...

"We lost to a very good team tonight which provided us a great opportunity to see where we need to get to. We have a lot of guys new to college tennis so it was good to expose to them national championship caliber programs. We have another tremendous opportunity on Sunday against the third ranked team in the nation [Mississippi State]."

Head coach, Ashley Fisher, on No. 43 Barroso-Campos defeating No. 33 Schretter…

"Alberto is playing some high-level tennis and is capable of beating anyone in college right now, which is helping the rest of the guys believe that good things are possible."
