TAMPA, Feb. 21, 2019 – After a winning weekend in Arizona, USF returns home to host RV/RV Virginia Tech, Georgia State and - / RV Texas State in the USF-Rawlings Invitational, Feb. 22-24.
USF (4-6) garnered national attention last week when it defeated then-No. 9/9 Arizona, 4-1, in the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. The Bulls went on to defeat UIC, 7-5, and battle New Mexico to eight innings for an exciting 2-1 victory. USF dropped close games against No. 7/8 Alabama, 2-0, and RV/RV Cal State Fullerton, 5-4.
Sophomore
Georgina Corrick's impressive performances in the circle led to American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors. The Sanford, Fla., native earned a complete game win over Arizona, and struck out 18 total batters in 16.2 innings over the weekend. Corrick's three straight wins improve her record to 3-1.
Redshirt sophomore
Bethaney Keen leads the team's offense with a .393 average. She has three runs and five RBI with 11 hits. She has 18 total bases this season and boasts a .643 slugging percentage.
On Saturday, USF will partner with the Ovarian Cancer Foundation for the "Strike Out Cancer" game. The foundation will provide teal ribbons and informational material for fans in order to promote awareness about Ovarian Cancer and the work the Ovarian Cancer Foundation does.
Scouting the Opponent
RV/RV Virginia Tech
USF will open the tournament against Virginia Tech on Friday at 3 p.m. The Hokies are undefeated this season, 9-0, after sweeps at the Cougar Classic and the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational. Virigina Tech has three run-rule victories this season including an 11-3 (5 inn.) victory over RV/RV Wichita State to open the season. Six of the Hokies' wins have been shutouts, delivered by sophomore Keely Rochard and junior Carrie Eberle. The two Hokie pitchers have combined for 71 strikeouts and 57 innings pitched. Rochard hasn't allowed a single run this season, has limited opponents to just six hits in 31 innings, and tossed five complete games. Eberle boasts a 1.35 ERA in four appearances and three complete games.
Virginia Tech's Darby Trull and Emma Strouth are both batting over .500. Trull has appeared in seven games where she has scattered 11 hits for a .550 average and a .750 slugging percentage. The sophomore has driven in eight runs and scored nine. She's 2-for-3 in stolen bases. Strouth has also impressed this season, batting .548 with 17 hits in nine appearances. The senior has driven in 14 runs and scored 10. She is 2-for-2 in stolen bases and has registered a .839 slugging percentage.
Georgia State
The Panthers are 1-9 this season with their sole win coming against Eastern Illinois in the Samford Tournament. Georgia State participated in the Hawaii Paradise Tournament as well as the Samford Tournament, and visited Georgia Tech for a midweek matchup.
The Panthers' top hitter is junior Baylee Sexton, who has 12 hits in 10 games. She has scored eight runs and driven in two.
GSU has featured five pitchers in the circle this season with redshirt sophomore Emily Soles recording the only win. She has held batters to a .301 average and leads the pitching staff in strikeouts with 10. Soles has a 7.00 ERA in 20 innings.
- / RV Texas State
The Bobcats (5-5) opened their season by hosting the 2019 Bobcat Classic before appearing in the Troy Cox Classic at New Mexico State. Texas State claimed wins over Colorado State and North Dakota State at home, and defeated San Jose State, and Montana (twice) in New Mexico.
Junior Christiana McDowell leads the Bobcats at the plate with a .516 average, 16 hits, 13 runs and five RBI in ten gams this season. She is a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen bases.
Junior Dalilah Barrera is undefeated in the circle, 3-0, in seven appearances. She has pitched 32.1 innings and registered 41 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .240 average. She leads the pitching staff with a 2.81 ERA. Sophomore Meagan King owns the other two wins for Texas State, tossing 32.2 innings in six appearances. She has a 3.64 ERA and has held batters to a .246 average.
