TAMPA, March 6, 2019 – USF scattered a whopping 17 hits in two games when it shut out CMU, 5-0, and took down Furman, 7-1, in a doubleheader Wednesday night.
Senior
Lindsey Devitt (Jacksonville, Fla.) tallied three runs after going 5-for-7 through both games, and redshirt sophomore
Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) recorded two multiple RBI games when she batted in six runners total throughout the night.
USF 5, CMU 0
Devitt opened the bottom of the first inning with a single up the middle, and junior
AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) laid down a bunt single to put a pair of Bulls on base. After the runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, Devitt was caught in a pickle and tagged between third and home. Bruni reached third on the same play, and scored on a groundout to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead after the first inning,
USF scored four runs on three hits and one error in the third inning. Once again, Devitt and Bruni kicked off the inning getting on base. Devitt hit her second single up the middle, Bruni drew a walk, and the Bulls loaded the bases when freshman
Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) reached first on an error. Keen and freshman
Tayli Filla (Ft. Myers, Fla.) each batted in a pair of runs when Keen hit a single and Filla smashed her third double of the season.
Senior
Nicole Doyle (Aurora, Ohio) earned the win for USF and improved her record to 3-6. She pitched five full innings and limited the Chippewas (7-11) to two hits with just one walk. Senior
Cheyenne Eggens (Vienna, Ohio) entered in relief and fanned four batters in two innings to help keep CMU at zero for a combined shutout.
USF 7, Furman 1
Furman (5-12) opened the scoring in the first inning when Marissa Guimbarda hit her seventh homer in the last eight games for a 1-0 lead. USF responded in the bottom of the frame when Keen hit a home run of her own that bounced off the top of the fence at left center to score two.
The Bulls bats boomed in a five-run fifth inning that saw five hits. Devitt opened the frame with a double and advanced on a wild pitch. Bruni bunt singled and stole second, and they both scored when Pierro hit her first career triple.
With a 4-1 lead, Keen hit a single for her third RBI of the game that scored Pierro.
Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio) extended the inning with a two-run rocket over the centerfield fence to tack on two more runs.
USF saw Eggens, Doyle and Corrick in the circle against the Paladins. Eggens earned her second win of the season, she pitched four innings allowing just three hits, and one walk. Corrick pitched 2.2 innings to earn the save and struck out seven batters in the process. She walked just one and allowed just one hit.
