TAMPA, FLA., April 18, 2019 – The USF baseball team scored the final nine runs to take the series opener against The Citadel, 9-1, Thursday night.
The Bulls (16-20) and the Bulldogs (10-26) were tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, when
Jake Sullivan (Tampa) gave his team the lead for good with a solo shot to left. It was the first of four runs in the inning on four hits. USF loaded the bags in the eighth for
Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.), who hit a towering grand slam to right, making it 9-1.
The runs were more than enough, as righty
Baron Stuart (Okeechobee, Fla.) had his best night as a starter.
Key Stats
8.0 – Stuart threw a career ling 8.0 innings, surrendering just one run on five hits, issuing no walks. It was also a season long for any USF pitcher.
3 & 6 – Chatfield matched a career high with his 3-fo-5 night and the six RBI were a career best.
0 – Stuart and freshman
Brandon Schrepf (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) combined to allow no walks.
12 – The Bulls tallied 13 hits, the 12
th time with double-digit hits this year.
Nota-Bulls
- Chatfield also had two doubles for the second time this year.
- The grand slam was USF's third this year and it was the second time in the last eight days that a Bull had a grand slam and six RBI in a game. Jordan Santos (Tampa) did it against FGCU on April 10.
- Senior Kyle Phillips (Orlando) went 3-for-5 with two runs. He has five hits in two games so far this week.
- Santos went 2-for-4 with a double.
- Freshman Julio Cortez (Miami) matched a career high with two hits for the second straight game.

The Bulls and The Citadel will continue the series with a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 11 a.m. due to expected inclement weather Friday in the Tampa area. Game Two of the twin bill is 40 minutes after the first.
About USF Baseball
The University of South Florida baseball team is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. The Bulls reached the NCAA Regionals in 2015 for the first time in 13 years and followed that success with a 42-19 record and second NCAA regional trip in three years in 2017. The Bulls continued the success under first-year head coach Billy Mohl in 2018, reaching 36 wins and advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, while being ranked in multiple polls for the final two months. USF earned its third NCAA Regional berth in the last four seasons and had six all-conference selections in 2018. The team had four players drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft, including the program's fourth first rounder, Shane McClanahan. Junior third baseman David Villar was taken in the 11th round after tallying 24 doubles and hitting better than .370, being named first team all-conference and an All-American. The USF Baseball program has won five conference titles and the Bulls have made 13 NCAA appearances.
